TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING IS A BAD THING Size: 91.44cm x 60.96cm Medium: Digital Manipulation Completion: April 2019 Alcohol, Marijuana, and LSD all open your mind to thoughts and emotions you might not express while sober. Being intoxicated you can connect with your subconscious mind, learning new things about yourself. Each image shows a different reality on how these things can change what you see. Munch's, The Scream inspired the use of colors, while pointillism inspired the use of structure. Too much of drugs or alcohol can make an image too hard to depict, but if you stay limited you can become aware of how your brain really thinks. This can open your mind to new ideas and research when you become sober. |
INSPIRATION
Edvard Munch's The Scream inspired my LSD photoshop, the usage of lines and saturated hues caught my attention. I was really interested by the patterns in the sky and land of the painting. From my own curiosity I had researched on how drugs affect people. I knew that when people trip on acid that they see colors more saturated and that they tend to see still objects moving. Many experience different patterns moving in the still objects. Reading about their experiences, they seem to be more surreal. Because of all the bright and moving colors I image a more mature childlike picture. Children always want to use brights and exciting hues so I was going to take that idea and incorporate it into my product

When people get high off of marijuana they become very calm. When researching for inspiration I was looking for something that gave me a calming feel. I knew I wanted something that had more cool colors and very little or no movement. I found this painting by James Abbott, I really liked how the water was very still and they sky's hues were cool and pastel. None of the boats seemed to be moving and the whole painting looked like there was a white or grey tint to it. This is the exact feeling I wanted my audience to get when they looked at the Photoshop of someone's reality when high. I have done an edit like this before so I knew that I could use a faded filter to be able to create the white tint to my picture.

My original idea for the marijuana reality was to make digital trees and objects in Photoshop. I was going to do this because I wanted to have a video game like reality. Many people said they feel like they are in a game or dream right before they realized that they are not asleep and that they were in real life. I figure the LSD photoshop would already look surreal so I knew I wanted this one to have the pixel feel. I didn't want the reality to look fake and like an actual video game so I knew that I couldn't just make digital objects. I came across this painting and it reminded me of a video game like idea. Pointillism is what made this feeling occur. I knew that with the white surrounding each little dot it made the picture look structured. I knew I would be able to get the pointillism effect by using a grain filter.

PLANNING
From past knowledge, I knew that when people are drunk that their balance gets thrown off. I have seen in cartoons how when somebody is intoxicated that everything in their reality is doubled. I thought I could use this same technique by making layers with different opacity. I wanted to make a still picture to look as though it was moving. To achieve that I could make the different layers on different angles. I will make sure that I make everything in the picture doubled not just the chairs.

Being high on marijuana can make you feel all different things. You can feel relaxed and hyper at the same time. Sometimes people feel as though they become clear minded and some sense become stronger. To enhance the idea of your senses becoming stronger, I would use strong, structured lines. I would make the water more clear than it really is to express how a person's reality can change. I also would make the boarder highlights around an objects higher to express that same idea.
|
From research, I knew that when people are tripping on acid they see patterns in other objects that aren't there. I took this idea and decided to make the outlines of objects a different shape. I used a square as the shape because I knew that in their reality they see lines sharper than a sober person. Also, their reality makes hues more vibrant and saturated or adds colors to things. When I use colors I would add a colors opposite instead of using the original color that was there and make them very vibrant.

EXPERIMENTATION
In photoshop I was testing different tools to see which one gave the best perspective on a persons reality when tripping on acid. I tried to use the smudge tool and go in a zig-zag motion along all the different colors to get an idea of how it would look. I thought this was a good tool to use but I wanted something better and more realistic. If I used the smudge tool it wouldn't look like the object had patterns in them, like I wanted. I would use this tool as a back up if I can not find a better tool that does what I want.

I tested the the on a single subject to see in Adobe how well I would be able to getting the blurry/dizzy moving affect. This is meant to represent a drunk persons vision and how they think things are moving around and being thrown off balance. I really liked this vision and planned to use it in my final product. I did have troubles making the stairs and more harder lines fade into the picture more. They kept looking like floating lines from nowhere since I had shifted a layer over more. I figured when I actually use this process I would be able to enlarge and change the opacity so the lines will not be harsh or floating.

ACT RESPONSES
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork?
Since I was aware in how I felt when I saw the inspiration pieces, I was able to depict what made me certain ways and use similar techniques in my piece.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
Having the pieces movement and lines not as structured. Also pointillism is making the pieces very precise and exact.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
That if you take the same amount, many people experience the same feelings and visuals when intoxicated, even though every person is different.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
I want people to understand that there is nothing wrong about talking about the taboo things. Society needs to stop making people afraid of things because that only leads themselves to destruction.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
That responses and opinions of drugs and alcohol would be very black and white, either people support it or hate it. Also that it would be hard to find videos of people explaining what they see while intoxicated.
